Improving visual language…
Massive Weird Cloud Indonesia 2010
/…/ Under English trees I contemplated that lost labyrinth, imagining it pristine and inviolate in a mountain fastness. I imagined it obliterated by paddies or under water; I pictured it endless, no longer consisting of octagonal pavilions and of paths that turn back on themselves but of rivers and provinces and kingdoms. I thought of a labyrinth of labyrinths, of a meandering, ever-growing labyrinth that would encompass the past and future and would somehow take in the heavenly bodies. Absorbed in these imaginings, I forgot my predicament as a hunted man. /…/
/…/ I felt again that swarming of which I have spoken. It seemed to me that the dank garden around the house was utterly saturated with invisible beings. These were Albert and myself, secret and busy and in numberless guises, in other dimensions of time. I lifted my gaze, and the tenuous nightmare fled. In the yellow and black garden, stood one man alone. But the man was strong as a statue, and he was coming towards me down the path. He was Captain Richard Madden. /…/

I’m not sure I would have listened back then though.Get to know your drawing tools. Draw all the time with the kind of tool you’ll be doing your final artwork with. Ignore all the ‘how to draw comics’ books, they teach you how someone else draws comics when you need to be finding out how you draw comics. Draw every day and show someone whose advice you trust. Keep a sketchbook with you at all times and draw people and objects from life. Learn how to really scrutinise things. Don’t rely on your memory to fill in the small details, observe it first-hand. Decide on a project - plan it from start to finish and then draw it. Make sure you finish it and then show someone. Get it printed, even if you just run it through a photocopier and show it to people. Then repeat. Learn how to love learning. Get analytical about your work. What would you do differently if you had to start again? Draw connections between other people’s work and your own, draw connections between other mediums and your own. Everything is relevant if you look at it in the right way. Be enthusiastic and interested. Be ambitious.
